School Uniforms

Whether or not schools uniforms you should be worn has be a debate for some time now. Growing up I always had to wear a uniform. Some people think school uniforms will do nothing but cut down on a students individuality. Others think that if would help kids who's parents would not or could not buy them the newest fad, they would not be embarrassed or harassed because of their clothes. School Uniforms are expensive and have no use out side of school. School is also the place where the next actors, writers, artists, politicians, inventors, designers and and musicians are trained. Some people think that school uniforms send a message to students that conformity is important and creativity is not, that is constrains our constitutional right to free speech and expression. Students are regularly suspended for not complying with the uniform code even if their school work is excellent. I didn't mind wearing uniforms because I didn't have to decide what to wear in the morning.

  1. my school also had the debate of uniforms or not. i went to the same school from pre-school to graduation. throughout these years, the topic of uniforms continued to be brought up, and each time it was turned down. although it has its benefits, i feel like it can prevent creativity of personal styles. in contrast, it can be helpful because of what conley said "you dont have to decide what to wear in the morning"

  2. When I think of uniforms, I try to refute the idea of how it is "conformity and oppression to creativity". I believe that in a sense it is pushing for students, individuals to become more individual in how he or she wears their clothing. It produces an pressured outlet of becoming outstanding in the crowd of the same. When you say that you didn't mind wearing uniforms, are you saying that according to yourself did it repress your own creativity?

  3. When I read this I thought of the example project that Dr. D brought up in class a long time ago about creativity in school uniforms. Students were forced to wear a certain set of clothes and still found ways to be creative. I remember in high school and middle school the "styles," and they came and went just like fads. Even though everyone was wearing uniforms I could still make an educated guess on what a person was like through how he or she wore them. I remember when the high socks came back in style sophomore and junior year, and when the pants would be what every guy wore, but then shorts became cooler than the pants. Etc etc

  4. Growing up I never was forced to wear a school uniform. Every child had their own individuality and sense of style. Today my daughter attends the same school system, and is forced to wear the school uniform attire. There are two sides to whether it is beneficial or not. The children whose parents can not afford to dress in the newest styles are no longer left out or made to feel ashmed of what they do or don't have. The other side is that takes away each individuality and sense of style that every child should develop for themself. There are no longer issues over who wears what clothes, but wear draw the line. In our school, any closed heel shoe is acceptable. Now the children look at each other for who has the most appealing shoes, so I guess all the creativity has not been ripped away quite yet.
